About Maku's Tea House

Maku's Tea House began on George Street in New Brunswick, New Jersey — one room, one counter, and more kettles than the space really had room for. What we did there was simple: sit someone down with a tea they hadn't had before and talk them through it until they knew why it tasted the way it did.

We're online now. The counter has closed, but the tea hasn't changed, and it turns out we can get it to more people this way than we ever could from a single room in New Brunswick. Everything in the shop is something we served across that counter first.

We buy in small lots and taste through every one before it goes into a pouch. If a batch isn't as good as the last, we don't list it — which is why the shop is a handful of teas rather than sixty. Each one is sealed in a resealable pouch and posted anywhere in the US.

And we still pour in person, we just come to you. A mobile tea tasting runs about ninety minutes at your address, with everything we need in the car. It's the nearest thing to the old counter, and most of what we know about tea is far easier to show than to write down.
